The news we have to report isn’t great, as some of the burns are more extensive than first thought. Burn injuries take time to develop, and sometimes they are less severe than first thought and sometimes more severe. Unfortunately, Dad is in the more severe category.

Dad went in for surgery number four on Monday. Again, the goal was to perform the tracheotomy and place temporary grafts on his legs and torso. Unfortunately, his tissue just wasn’t ready. They will go back in on Friday with the same goals. During the three hour surgery, they did quite a lot of debridement and management of his injuries, which is all part of the extensive treatment he will receive over the course of the next many months.

The burn unit doctors had a plastic surgeon consult during the surgery on Monday, looking at the burns on his face. Those also are more severe than initially thought. He will require grafting on his face, although they do tell us his beard will grow back! On Friday, the plastic surgeon will attempt grafting on his eyelids to ensure proper function as he heals.

The burns on his hands are quite bad; it looks now as though he will lose some, if not many, of his fingertips. Only time will tell.

We are sorry that we do not have better news. The staff at the hospital has been amazing, both to dad and to us. We are grateful that Dad is in such a wonderful facility. Please keep them and dad in your thoughts and prayers as we travel down this uncertain road.

Colin and Ian

Friends and family, It is hard to believe that it has been two weeks since Dad’s accident.
